Mesa officials have finalized a formal policy on illegal immigration, details of which will be announced Wednesday.
Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, who has been working with police officials on this issue, said from what he understands, the police department’s policy thus far has been in practice informally.”So this is a step to formalize existing practices and to tweak it,” Smith said.
“We wanted a clear and concise policy to let everyone know here is exactly how we’ll respond on this sensitive matter and this is what we’re doing to combat it and also giving the tools to our officers on the streets,” Smith added.
The policy will outline how Mesa plans to address the illegal immigration issue. It has nothing to do with other law enforcement agencies, Smith said.
Smith specified that the timing of the policy has nothing to do with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s sweep last week.
“It’s something I’ve been talking about for months and months,” Smith said.
The new mayor had on numerous occasions talked about putting together a formal policy during his campaign.
“Having a specific policy - it’s one thing I wanted to jump on right away,” said Smith, who took over as mayor June 2.
Arpaio was upset with city police chief George Gascón for overreaching by sending his officers across Mesa to observe the sweep. Gascón had reacted by saying he was “disappointed” at the sheriff’s comments.
Speaking about the sweep and the ensuing back and forth between the sheriff and Gascón, Smith said: “What happened with the sweeps is what happens when you have that perfect storm of an emotional issue with emotional people.”
Smith maintained that Mesa police had no desire to interfere with MCSO’s activities.
“We were not concerned with the sheriff’s deputies being here and we welcome his concern,” Smith said. “We were concerned about the emotional nature of the argument and we were there to protect the protesters from each other.”

This just in, if you commit a felony in another state and are pulled over in Mesa, they no longer will arrest the person. After all, it was not a Mesa or AZ felony, it was someone else’s problem.

Being a SR. citizen I can tell you the large majority of Sr.’s are so irate about illegals coming to our U.S. (God Bless America) and we are having to pay for public assistance, medical and then to pay for a lot of ESL teachers and extra law enforcement …….Our taxes keep going up, as do our medicare payments and medical suppliments.
