Mesa’s Code Compliance Division is set to take over the city’s Animal Control Unit from the police department.
Animal Control is responsible for handling complaints ranging from dog bites to animal abuse to unsanitary conditions.
Code Compliance Director Mike Renshaw said police department officials approached neighborhood services several months ago with the idea of taking over the unit because it was felt that department was a “better fit” to serve in that role.
Currently there are two positions - a supervisor and an officer. Renshaw said they hope to hire two additional animal control officers and an animal control specialist, which will be an administrative position.
“The idea is to better deliver service - a city of this size needs more staff,” Renshaw said.
As of the latest available figures, between April 28 and May 19, the police department handled 554 calls - many of which were for dog and cat bites.
Residents with concerns should contact the city at (480) 644-2211.
