Neighborhood meeting at Washington Activity Center

August 22nd, 2008, 8:38 am · 1 Comment · posted by Sonu Munshi

Mesa’s Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Department has planned a meeting with residents in west Mesa’s Washington neighborhood to keep them abreast of the status of the Washington Activity Center.

Facing a severe budget deficit, the center was on the city’s chopping block, but got some reprieve after urgent pleas from the neighboring residents to keep it going for the sake of the children who use the recreational facility.

For now, the center has a lease of life until the summer of 2009 through use of federal grant monies. Residents will be asked to fill up some paperwork to process the same.

Besides parks and recreation, representatives from Neighborhood Services department and the police department will be present at next week’s meeting. Residents will be explainedthe general timeline of what will happen over the next year, a city official said.

After next year, it’s been suggested to try and rope in nonprofits or other groups who would be willing to keep the center’s activities running. But city officials have not yet started that process officially.
