The Mesa voter-approved Proposition 400, which will allow city inspectors to enter rental properties to check for health and safety issues, is likely to be drafted as a city ordinance and approved by the City Council early January.
Scott Bouchie, the city’s acting code compliance director, said Thursday that the department is “more than likely” going to present a draft ordinance to the Neighborhood Services Committee on Dec. 4 for implementation recommendations.
Then it’s likely to go to the Mesa City Council for approval in the first week of January.
Bouchie said the inspections will be complaint-based, although permission will be needed from the owner or tenant to enter a rental property. The city can also get a court order, “if there was evidence that there’s a safety hazard,” Bouchie added.
Unofficial results from the Nov. 4 election showed the proposition received overwhelming support, with nearly 79 percent voting in favor of such inspections, versus 21 percent opposed to the move.
