Col. Don Belche, of Air Force Headquarters, visited the Junior ROTC Program at Mesa High to rate the program’s effectiveness, efficiency and safety, including such facets as finances, logistics, uniforms, weapons, and cadet community service and conduct.
Instructors and cadets received the highest rating attainable, exceeds standards.
Maj. Dan Leos and Master Sgt. Vern Newton teach Junior ROTC at Mesa High. “This is not an easy achievement, and this is the second time in a row that we have received the prestigious recognition. We are inspected every third year,” Maj. Leos said.
“Master Sgt. Vern Newton provided outstanding leadership and logistical support of over $70,000 in Air Force Junior ROTC uniform items and equipment. He championed an incredible effort for accounting and organizing these items to exceed inspection standards,” Leos added.
Col. Belche noted, “The instructors are both extremely talented and dedicated. They create a dynamic and supportive learning environment in and out of the classroom.”
“Cadets display exemplary pride, and their extensive participation in numerous community service projects is very impressive.”
“As a result, Unit AZ-931 is making a positive impact on Mesa High School, the school district and surrounding community!”
