Traffic is being restricted to one lane in each direction from Broadway Road to Southern Avenue on Dobson Road after a water main leak which led to the formation of a sinkhole, south of 8th Ave.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, if possible.
Mesa spokesman Ian Satter said city transportation crews responded to a call about a sinkhole Monday night and placed a temporary plate to prevent accidents. The sinkhole is in the middle of the street in the changing lane, Satter said.
A leak in a nearby water main is seeping into a storm drain, which caused the depression on the road, Satter explained.
Repair work is expected to be finished by Tuesday night, although no specific time has been given yet.
